Pool Openings

When using ACR Pools, you can be rest assured that a trained technician with years of experience will be opening your pool and they can handle any situation that comes up.  Some pool openings are very basic (one pump, one filter), however many pools consist of multiple components.

Oftentimes, there are complex setups with multiple pumps, filters, heaters, waterfalls, salt water systems, laminar effects, sheer descents, slides, UV systems, automated systems, and other elements that our technicians are equipped to handle.

Who wants to answer a hundred questions about their pool when you hired someone to open it?  We try to stay current with the latest pool equipment and supplies to make the opening experience easier for you, the customer.

A typical pool opening includes the following:

  • Professional removal and fan folding of cover for summer storage (any excess water and/or debris/leaves on top of cover prior to pool opening will result in additional charges).
  • Cover is placed in shed, garage or other location where customer prefers
  • Plugs & skimmer gizmos are removed and system is primed with water
  • Return eyeballs, skimmer baskets, and any drain plugs installed
  • Filter site is assembled and tested for any leaks. Pump, filters, chlorinator and any other components are connected. O-rings & gaskets are lubricated to maintain a water-tight seal
  • Once the system is up and running we will add the initial chemicals as well as DE, if you have a DE filter
  • Hand-rails, diving boards, & ladders will be installed and checked for safety. On above ground pools, we suggest putting the stairs/ladder in after the pool is vacuumed
  • Once the system is running with chemicals, our technicians will advise if there are any issues.  Typically the next step is to Power Vacuum the pool.

Power Vacuums

The initial vacuum, and sometimes the first several vacuums, after opening your pool are typically done with the power vacuum.  Most pools in Jacksonville will accumulate a layer of dirt and algae from sitting all winter, especially if you have a mesh safety cover, which you’ll want to power vacuum out.

If you closed the pool with leaves, or leaves got under the cover during the winter, you’ll want to remove them with the power vacuum as well. This is the suggested method to clean the pool, as opposed to running heavy dirt and leaves through your system and filter.

Vacuuming heavy debris through your system can cause negative performance issues with your filter and pump, not to mention you risk clogging pipes underground.  Let the trusted experts clean your pool the right way to start off the season.

Our power vacuum is freestanding and doesn’t use your system at all.  After the pool is power vacuumed and brushed, you are typically ready to use a robot or cleaner if you have one.  Or you can have us handle the weekly maintenance.

Salt Water

Salt Water

We like to think of ourselves as “salt water experts” at ACR Pools.  We were installing salt water systems long before it was trendy.  The pros typically outweigh the cons, but if you would like a quote or more information, we offer free estimates.  Most salt water chlorinators are compatible with your existing equipment.

This means that you do not need to buy a new pump or new filter to convert to salt water.  The salt water system is connected into your plumbing, oftentimes replacing chlorinators that used to hold tablets.

The chlorinator gets power from being wired into your existing timer at the filter site.  In some cases, an electrician may be needed to wire the system, for example when the timer is in the garage or basement.

How does it work?

There is a misconception that salt water pools do not contain chlorine.  This is false.  A salt water pool sanitizes the water with chlorine, just like a pool with chlorine tablets.  The key difference between them is how this chlorine is mixed into the water.  Salt chlorine generators, or chlorination systems, convert sodium chloride, NaCl, into chlorine.

NaCl is essentially table salt.  The key component in the salt system is the salt cell and it works by electrolysis.  The salt water is electrically charged, which splits the alt molecules and generates chlorine, Cl.  This is basic chemistry. The salt generator, or salt water system, has 2 main components; the salt cell and the power center.

The salt cell is plumbed into your pipes so that water flows through it.  As water passes through the cell, it goes through metal blades coated with ruthenium or iridium.

The metals are charged by the power center, which gives the electricity for the electrolysis process.  Some power centers even have a control panel, where the user can adjust the chlorine output and read diagnostics.  The salt level is normally kept around 3000 ppm, or parts per million, for optimal performance.

Salt Water Maintenance

Another misconception is that salt water systems require zero maintenance.  This is also false.  Salt water pools are relatively maintenance-free, but you should always be checking chemicals on a regular basis for the safety of everyone using the pool.  You will also need to add salt throughout the pool season.  Typically salt is added at the beginning of the season, after power vacuuming, and intermittently throughout the season as rain water dilutes your salt level.  We make sure to keep our salt levels accurate as part of our weekly maintenance.  One other element of salt system maintenance is cleaning your salt cell.  From time to time, calcium and other minerals can build up on the metal blades, impeding performance of your salt system.  This can be cleaned with acid or salt system cleaning solutions.

Service calls and Plumbing

The unfortunate truth is that sitting all winter is not good for pool equipment, even if kept in the garage or shed.  Most of the components in your pool system are designed to have water running through them constantly, so sitting dry can on occasion cause issues.

Sometimes when we open a pool, a pump that worked last season doesn’t work.  Other times, you might see something leak that didn’t used to leak.

Our technicians are trained to handle most situations that we might encounter, so usually we can address most of these issues on the spot.

If we can bring your pump back to life, we will! But in the circumstances where something is broken or needs to be replaced, we can handle that also.

Our prices are reasonable and our senior technicians can fix even the most difficult pools.  We will work to get you an estimate and get you on the schedule quickly so you don’t lose valuable summer days.

Your pool equipment is valuable and we strive to make sure everything is winterized properly  This ensures your equipment lasts as long as it can.  We also don’t mess around when it comes to blowing out your pipes.  We use commercial blowers to ensure each line is cleared and then we add antifreeze as an extra precaution.

Decks and Patios

Decks & Patios

Redeveloping an underused backyard or side of your house can transform it from a drab space to a relaxing hangout for family and friends. A deck or a pool can offer new functionality, visual appeal, and social interaction to your yard. However, transforming a backyard or side of your house requires more than just a solid architectural plan. It requires research, planning, and execution to make sure your design works for you and your family. Even if you don’t have plans to build a new house, transforming a backyard or side of your house involves the same principles. Below are some ways that a pool or a patio can improve your backyard.

Having a pool or a patio can help add social interaction to your backyard. You can entertain friends and family in the backyard, whether it’s with friends lounging on the patio or playing a game of horseshoes. A pool or a patio can also help you spend more time outside, which is good for your health. A pool or a patio cover or a pool liner can help protect your investment, so you don’t have to worry as much about damage to your patio. A pool or a patio cover or a pool liner can also make your backyard more comfortable. A pool or a patio cover or a pool liner can help protect your deck or patio from harsh weather, like rain or snow.

One of the most important aspects of a patio or a pool is privacy. A backyard can be a very public space, especially if it’s your front yard, but a pool or a patio can provide a high level of privacy. Even though you’ll likely have a fence or walls around your backyard, the space in between the fence and the ground contains a lot of information. A pool or a patio can provide both an aesthetic and functional barrier, making your backyard more private. A pool or a patio can also be a great space to read a book or relax without being disturbed by neighbors’ kids.

Decks & Patios

A pool or a patio doesn’t just provide privacy or visual appeal. They can also provide functionality. If your backyard is relatively small or your house doesn’t have a large side yard, a pool or a patio could provide additional space for a barbecue, a garden, or a play structure. A pool or a patio can help increase your real estate value and make your house more desirable to potential buyers. The damage that a pool can do to concrete or brick surfaces is extensive. A pool or patio cover or liner can protect your patio or deck, not only from damage but also from premature wear and tear.

A pool or a patio can help your backyard feel much more open and welcoming than a slightly raised patch of grass or dirt. A pool or a patio cover can help create a more defined outdoor space. If you have a pool or a patio, your yard can have a defined border. This makes your yard feel much more like a backyard. A pool or a patio cover or liner can also help you create a consistent aesthetic in your backyard. Different areas, like the patio furniture and the pool, can have a consistent color, shape, and style, making your backyard look much more cohesive. A pool or a patio cover, even a cheap vinyl pool cover, can help make your backyard look much more expensive than it is.
